Alternate browsers (Firefox and Chrome) are in another layer. I gave up, since we're looking at soon creating a whole new gold image anyway. So I believe this is some sort of unidesk problem. In one case, it was the CHKDSK that was the really necessary part.

I'll post the result here. So yes, when I perform your cleanup process and run Windows Update again, trying for IE 11 or 10 I get the same 9c59 error. I would expect even existing desktops to fail horribly with the new OS layer. What should I do in advance of opening a support case?
And all of them together should fix a lot of OS update problems. Gunther's procedure worked nicely to reset Windows Updates, but the installation of IE 10 or 11 via Windows Update or by offline installer package keeps ending with the same error message: Our production IE9 is "baked in" the OS layer. With IE 10 I haven't tried the standalone installer yet, so the Windows Update installer gives error 09c59.
That's the revision number, and you want the highest one. Have tried many permutations of Windows Updates and standalone installers of same along with "offline" IE 11 installer. In our experience, 90% of your app layers will cause Windows setup to fail, because of decryption failures. I'm really not sure which of those would help, but all are valuable.
Once all that is done, shut down the non-Unidesk machine. I have talked to our sysadmin and made a clone of our gold image machine, so now I'm feeling brave enough to try your procedure.
